Margaret Elaine Atkinson, 80, died peacefully on December 6, 2018 at Huntsville Hospital in the presence of family after a short struggle with acute dementia and a lifelong struggle with type I diabetes.  Margaret was born in Huntsville, AL, the daughter of Samuel Martin and Bessie Martin and sister of Douglas Martin.

In 1957, Margaret married her high school sweetheart, John Paul Atkinson, and later raised their daughter and son together on their family farm near Greenbriar.  Margaret loved reading, shopping, RV’ing, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren who lovingly know her as “Mema.”

Margaret is survived by her husband, John Paul; their two children, John Samuel Atkinson and Amy Atkinson Garvin; her grandchildren, John Wesley Atkinson, Wendy Atkinson Dunn, and Samantha Joy Cypert; and her great grandchildren, John Elias Atkinson, Cooper Kelton Dunn, Skylar Jane Mendez, and Mia Brooke Dunn.  In addition, Margaret is survived by her late brother’s extended family, and a number of other relatives and close friends.
