Dr. Ralph C. Samlowski, age 59, passed away suddenly on February 4, 2019 at his home. Ralph was a loving father, husband, and friend. He is preceded in death by his mother Renate (Roye) Samlowski, and his father Dr. Werner E. Samlowski. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Jana (Berry) Samlowski; daughter, Tia (Tim) Nelson; son, Ian Samlowski; brothers, Dr. Eberhard Samlowski, Norbert (Heidi) Samlowski; brothers-in-law, Floyd (Gladys) Berry, Randall (Antolina) Berry; sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Steve) Rieser, Frank (Elaine) Penna; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as many close lifelong friends.
Ralph was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio where he graduated from Walnut Ridge Highschool in 1977. He attended The Ohio State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in German in 1982. He went on to graduate with honors from medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1988. Following his graduation, he was inducted into the AΩA National Medical Honor Society in 1988.
Throughout his career, he held a variety of teaching positions in Ohio, South Dakota, and Alabama ranging from associate professor to residency director and department chair. Most recently, Ralph was employed as a hospitalist at Huntsville Hospital where he loved being able to provide excellent, personalized care for his patients and their families. Ralph’s passion in his professional life was the education and training of future physicians. He was beloved and respected by his countless students who nominated him for numerous teaching awards that he received over the course of his career.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dr. Ralph Samlowski, or Dr. Sam, and mailed to UAB Huntsville Campus at 301 Governor’s Drive, SW Ste 313A, Hunstville, Alabama 35801. These funds will support Dr. Samlowski’s wish to fund Huntsville medical students, especially for those interested in Family Medicine.
A celebration of Ralph’s life and achievements will be held on February 16th, 2019 from 11:00-2:00 PM at the Westin Hotel in Huntsville, Alabama.
