October 4, 1927 — March 31, 2020

Bunyan Burton Pierce, 92, of Madison, AL, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 31, 2020.

A private graveside service will be held on Friday, April 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Madison Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to a favorite charity.

Bunyan was born on October 4, 1927 in Lyman, Mississippi.  After graduating from Lyman High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Pasadena.  He graduated from Perkinston Junior College in Mississippi where he played basketball.  He also graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi.  He taught school at Long Beach High School and Woolmarket High School in Mississippi where he coached the boys and girls basketball teams.

He later moved to Madison and worked as an Auditor for NASA until retirement.  Later he worked as License Inspector/Auditor for the City of Madison.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Winona Rushing Pierce, his six children, Charles Pierce, Lewis Pierce (Beth), William Pierce (Debbie), Dolores Pierce Nichols (Danny), Lisa Pierce Arflack (Kevin), and Gail Pierce Floyd (Paul), 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Bunyan never met a stranger and with his sense of humor and exceptional abilities as a storyteller he made many friends.

Traveling in his motor home, camping, fishing, the Atlanta Braves, and spending quality time with his loving family were among his many hobbies.

We will miss our husband, Dad, and Paw Paw but will look forward to our reunion with him in Heaven.
