On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, Elsie Elliott Brown, loving wife of 63 years and mother of three children, passed away at age 83.
Elsie was born in 1938 in Birmingham, AL to Bruce and Margaret (Slack) Elliott. She received her Bachelors degree from the University of Alabama in 1958, her Masters from UAB, and taught high school Algebra and Trigonometry for 14 years in Alabama and Kansas. On July 26, 1958, she married Charles Wesley Brown. They raised three children, Wesley, Laura, and Jim
While teaching math and raising three children Elsie also enjoyed being active in her Church family, teaching Sunday school, leading/sponsoring youth fellowship, leadership roles in United Methodist Women, and lay delegate to annual North Alabama conference. Elsie had a passion for crafts and enjoyed doing things for family and friends: sewing clothes and toys, baking, decorating, calligraphy, volunteering with the Garden Guild, and leadership in local University of Alabama Alumni Associations. Elsie also made time to travel with Charlie, her husband and bridge partner of 63 years, visiting six of the seven continents together.
Elsie was preceded in death by her father, Bruce, her mother, Margaret, and her grandson Bryan Brown. She is survived by her husband Charlie, their three children and their spouses, Wesley (Teresa) Brown of Athens, Laura (Steve) Rethorst of Wichita KS, and Jim Brown of Lexington KY, six grandchildren and their spouses, David (Rhia) Brown, Scott (Caitlin) Rethorst, Stephen Brown, Kelly (Reece) Richards, Terry Brown, and Miriam (Chris) Roseblossom, and four great grandchildren, Lily, Riley, Charlie, and William.
A service will be held on Saturday, August 7th, 2021 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Madison, AL, visitation 9:30am followed by celebration of Elsie’s life at 11am.
