Maria L. Priebe

Maria L. Priebe, 68, of Madison, AL. passed away August 15, 2021.

She was born and raised in Chicago, IL. and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

She taught Art at St. Benedict High school in Chicago before marrying Craig Priebe. Maria was also a substitute teacher in Catholic grade schools in California, Nebraska, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Tennessee, while Craig was an Active Duty Air Force Officer over a 30-year career.

Maria and Craig moved to Madison in August of 2006, after Craig’s retirement from the Air Force, where she taught art at St. John the Baptist Catholic grade school from August 2007 through May 2016. During this period, she actively facilitated and assisted in organizing and displaying student art in the Huntsville Art Museum during Youth Art month exhibits, in the Children’s Art tent at the Annual Panoply Festival, and the Diocesan Art Festivals for the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham. Her students consistently garnered awards in their age categories for their artwork.

Besides teaching art, Maria also volunteered to provide religious education instruction to the youth of St. John’s Parish who were preparing to receive the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation. She was also active in the Lay Eucharistic Ministry at St. John’s Parish.

Maria is survived by her husband, Craig J. Priebe of Madison, AL; daughter, Whitney Priebe Aubuchon (Mark) of St. Louis, MO; daughter, Lydia Priebe (Clint Myshrall) of Madison, AL; grandson, Joseph Louis Myshrall of Madison, AL; mother, Louise Lydia Montenero Vargas of Grand Junction, CO; sister, Andrea Vargas Clark, of Mesa, CO; brother, Antonio J. “Tony” Vargas of Houston, TX.
