Bessie Kirby Byrd

March 3, 1941 — November 29, 2021

Bessie Dansby Kirby Byrd, age 80, of Madison, Alabama went to be with our Lord on November 29, 2021.

She was born on March 3, 1941 in Selma, Alabama. She began her education at Byrd Elementary School and graduated from Parrish High School in 1959.  Upon graduation from high school, she enrolled at Auburn University. During her time in college, she was active in several organizations including Kappa Delta Sorority. Bessie graduated from Auburn in 1963 with a B.S. degree in elementary education.

Following her graduation from Auburn, Bessie moved to Huntsville, Alabama and began working for the U.S. Army Missile Command. On August 19, 1967, Bessie was married to James Byrd of Ozark, Alabama and they moved to Madison, Alabama to raise their family. She returned to work for the U.S. Army Missile Command after many years at home raising her children and retired in 2014. 

Bessie loved her family deeply and created a lifetime of wonderful memories through cherished family traditions and celebrations. She was especially devoted to her two grandsons and loved being their “Nanny”. The foundation of love that she poured into all of those around her will bless her family for generations to come.

Bessie is survived by her husband of 54 years, James Byrd, daughter Jacqueline Sasser, son Kirby Byrd and wife Adrienne, and her two beloved grandsons James Sasser and Owen Sasser.
