Doug Petty

December 20, 1949 — March 17, 2026

Madison

Robert Douglas Petty, 76, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 17, 2026. He was born on December 20, 1949, in Houston, Texas and was always so proud of being a Texan. He was a humble man who when asked how he was doing, would always respond with, “Better than I deserve.” He had three lifetime priorities: Faith in God, Family and Ministry. He started most days in the Bible, seeking God’s direction and will for his life. He sent devotionals to encourage and inspire folks all over the country. He loved fiercely as he raised four daughters and enjoyed nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren alongside his wife, best friend, and true love, “Marg.” He was proud of his family and would brag about them to whomever would listen. He never neglected his ministry. He would share Jesus whenever someone would listen. For example, while he battled cancer, he became known as “that guy with the little Jesus figurines.” If he saw someone who looked discouraged or sad, he’d offer them a small figure of Jesus that said, “Jesus loves you.” He carried these around in his pocket. He also taught Sunday school to young men and was instrumental in turning their hearts to Christ. He coached girls in basketball and softball and was nicknamed “Unckie” by his players. He loved them like family. He worked as an inspector in petrochemical and nuclear plants until he accepted a job on Redstone Arsenal where he coordinated the building of facilities between contractor and NASA.

Doug is survived by his wife, Margaret Petty and four daughters: Tasha Levert of Denham Springs, LA, Nicole Arnold of Covington, LA, Jessica Smith of Madison, AL, and Ali King of Madison, AL. As well as a sister, Gayle Moak of Bossier City, LA and a brother, Kirk Petty of Buna, TX. He was preceded by his father, Robert Q. Petty, his mother, Vara Alice of Buna, TX, a sister, Layne Stanley and a brother, Gary Petty.
