Jack Cary Reily Jr., 82, of Limestone County, passed away peacefully on July 21 at his home, surrounded by the love of his life Patricia and his daughters Chris and Kelly.
Born in Meridian, Mississippi, Cary dedicated his life to learning. He earned his master's degree in nuclear physics from Mississippi State University before embarking on an illustrious 40-year career with NASA. Cary's fascination with science and the universe was so profound that he would have worked for free if it meant he could do what he loved with others who shared his passion. He shared his learning and curiosity with anybody and everybody in his circle.
Throughout his tenure at NASA, Cary played a role in some of the agency's most groundbreaking projects. His career spanned the height of the space race in the 60’s, the Apollo missions, and the International Space Station program. In his later years, he contributed to the development of the James Webb Space Telescope, leaving an indelible mark on space exploration that will continue long after his passing.
Cary’s colleagues remember him not only for his brilliance but also for his quick wit and humor. He never missed the opportunity to speak his mind through one-liners, and had a lifetime’s worth of stories that were graciously shared with his friends and loved ones. His daughters were blessed with his quick wit, and it was impossible to be near him without laughing.
Cary was a devoted environmentalist and he held a deep respect for nature and the planet. His love for animals was evident from a young age. Cary passed on this appreciation for all living creatures to his daughters, fostering in them the same love and respect for the natural world that he held dear. This legacy of compassion made his comical "love/hate" relationship with the local squirrels all the more endearing. Friends and neighbors were often entertained by Cary's creative and determined efforts to outwit these clever creatures and protect his meticulously maintained lawn.
Above all, Cary loved his wife and daughters deeply. His affection extended beyond his immediate family to friends and colleagues. Those who knew him best will remember Cary as a thoughtful, compassionate, and hardworking man whose contributions to space exploration and environmental awareness will continue to impact future generations.
A memorial service will be held on August 4th at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home, Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Space Camp Scholarship Fund or Alabama Wildlife Center in Cary's memory.
