James “Jim” Arthur Swearingen, age 83, of Madison, Alabama, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026.
He was born August 7, 1942, in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late Donald and Melda Swearingen. He grew up in Weirton, West Virginia, and joined the United States Army at 20 years old. He served twenty-two years in the Army and served during the Vietnam War as a helicopter repairer and gunner. He was stationed in Korea, Germany, and Alaska as well as several other American bases. After his retirement from the United States Army, he worked for DynCorp on the helicopter test board before his retirement in 2009.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend he never met a stranger and enjoyed helping others whether it was ringing the bell for the Salvation Army or donating bikes at Christmas. He loved to sing off-key, bake, and enjoyed going to football games. He was married to his wife Beverly Kay Swearingen for 62 years. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jeffery Swearingen; his daughter, Marcey Swearingen; his five brothers, Donald, Robert, William, Walter, and Thomas; and his two sisters, Elizabeth and Leona.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Kay Swearingen; two grandchildren, Cyrus Swearingen (Tosha) and McKenzie Swearingen Iott (Nicholas); and two great-grandsons, Riley and Parker Swearingen.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to The Neighborhood at Madison assisted living facility and SouthernCare New Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care and support shown during this time.
A celebration of life will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home in Madison, Alabama.
