J. H. May, affectionately known as "Papee," passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 86. Born on January 12, 1939, in Vernon, Texas, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
J.H. proudly served his country in the United States Army for 20 years, including a tour in the Vietnam War during the Tet Offensive. After retiring from military service, he continued working in manufacturing and distribution. He was a hardworking and dedicated man who never lost his sense of humor.
Those who knew J.H. will remember him for his sharp wit, his playful spirit, and the way he lit up a room with laughter. He loved Westerns, sharing stories, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn L. May; his children Cheryl (James), Wylie, Cynthia (Keith), and Michelle; his grandchildren Courtney (Jason), Brandy (Eliott), Kindra (Travis), Trista, Nikki, Chance, and Lizzi; seven great-grandchildren; and his brothers Donnie (Myrna) and Michael. He also leaves behind 12 nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
J.H. was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Jewel Wines.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home in Madison, Alabama. Family and friends are invited to come celebrate a life well lived.
