Joel Colvin Lonergan, Sr.

Joel Colvin Lonergan, Sr., of Madison, Alabama, has sadly passed away at the age of 67. Born on June 19, 1956, in Birmingham, Alabama. Joel leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Joel's educational journey began at Berry High School in Birmingham, Alabama, where he enjoyed track and cross country, which carried over to college at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Advertising and Communications.

Joel's career spanned several institutions. He began his professional journey at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa as a Graphic Designer where his creative talents shone through as he designed the original costume for the beloved mascot,  Big AL. He then transitioned to Indiana State University as a valued member of their University Relations team. In 1989 he moved his family to Huntsville where he would work in communications and marketing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) for nearly 30 years ultimately retiring from his role as the Associate Vice President of Public Affairs.Throughout his tenure at UAH, Joel went above and beyond by mentoring and leading numerous student organizations.

Joel was not only known for his remarkable work ethic but also for his strong faith, being a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. His infectious smile and laughter left a positive mark on all those fortunate enough to cross paths with him.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joel had a rich personal life filled with hobbies and interests. In his younger years at FBC Huntsville, Joel played an integral role in advancing the youth group's activities and also served on the board responsible for bringing the Contemporary Christian Stage to the Big Spring Jam, leaving an immense impact on this annual event. He found joy and relaxation through family beach trips, eagerly looking forward to this annual tradition each year. Additionally, he had a passion for all types of music, a love for golf, Star Wars, Alabama Football, movies, and anything chocolate, i.e. Reese's Cups and chocolate chip cookies. Joel also spent many hours assisting in his children's activities, be it through dance routines, musical theater support, or audio engineering.

Joel's memory will forever be cherished by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Terry Lonergan, who stood beside him throughout their journey and shared in every triumph and joy. Joel was a dedicated father to his daughters Kristen Jobes (Dale) and Britney Deutschendorf (Lee), as well as to his son Joel Colvin Lonergan, Jr. (Cassie), and loving brother to his only sibling, Cindy Lonergan Smith.

Joel's grandchildren were a source of immense pride and joy in his life. Grayson, Porter, and Reese Jobes, Carson and Logan Deutschendorf, as well as Ellie, Rhett, and Raleigh Lonergan were fortunate to have had such a loving and caring grandfather.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents Don and Joyce Lonergan. Their memories will forever live on within his family. We now take solace that Joel is now also at peace in his eternal heavenly home.
