Larry Garner Singleton, 93, passed away on March 2nd, 2026, in Huntsville, Alabama, surrounded by family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, respected businessman, and servant of the Lord, Larry left a lasting impact through his professional accomplishments and servant leadership. Larry was born on October 10th, 1932, in Memphis, Tennessee. Larry was the son of Porter Earl Singleton and Margaret Avalon Garner Singleton, both of whom preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were two brothers Porter E. Singleton, Jr., and William Lloyd Singleton, and two sisters, Dorothy Helen Singleton Bonner and Barbara Faye Singleton Waldon.

He was a proud graduate of Nicholas Blackwell High School where in Bartlett, Tennessee where he played clarinet in the band and ran track. It was there he met his future bride and the love of his life, Gloria Joy Martin, who also preceded him in death after 56 years of marriage.

He joined the United States Air Force after high school to serve his country in the Korean War where he served in the Strategic Air Command, 42nd Armament and Electronic Squad Maintenance stateside as an Electronic Maintenance Measure Mechanic. He left the Air Force with the rank of Corporal and an honorable discharge. He was a member of what is known as the “Silent Generation”. Those born between 1928 and 1951, grew up in the shadow of World War II, the most destructive war in history. This generation was characterized as quiet, respectful, and hardworking ... which perfectly describes Larry.

After his service to his country, he pursued higher education at Memphis State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Chemistry. At graduation, he chose employment at General Electric (GE) in Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Redstone Arsenal. At NASA, using only a slide rule and handwritten notes, he co-wrote the NASA Technical Note “Ascent From The Lunar Surface”, cementing his contribution to America’s Great Space to the Moon.

After GE lost their contract with NASA, he continued his career in Matawan, New Jersey, working at Bell Labs. While in Matawan, he and his wife Gloria, founded the Calvary Baptist Church in their living room, a church that still exists today.

Faith and family were central to Larry’s life. To be nearer to family in Memphis, he took a lateral move at GE and relocated to Damascus, Maryland for 11 years. In Damascus, he continued his faith journey when he became an ordained deacon, at the First Baptist Church of Damascus. With aging parents and in-laws, he relocated to Dunwoody (Atlanta), Georgia, where he remained until retirement at age 60. He was a deacon at Dunwoody Baptist Church. After retirement, he moved to Huntsville, where he remained until his death. Larry served the Lord for the remainder of his life at the Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Larry is survived by his youngest sister, Sammie Sue Singleton Gilmer of Olive Branch, Mississippi; his son, Larry G. Singleton, Jr. (Cindy) of Woodstock, Georgia, and his daughter Lauri Lynn Singleton Webster (Phil) of Huntsville, Alabama; six grandchildren: Larry G. Singleton, III (Jamie), Alyssa Joy Webster, Nicholas Singleton (Amber), Kimberlyn P. Webster, Elizabeth D. Singleton, and Heather S. Webster; and, four great- grandchildren: Larry Singleton, IV, Westin Singleton, Grayson Singleton, and Madilyn Joy Singleton.
