Lud Anthony Newton, 82, of Madison, AL, a proud U.S. Army veteran and beloved husband and father, passed away on August 30, 2025, after a long struggle with several illnesses.
Born on January 21, 1943, in San Antonio, TX, the son of Alfonso and Effie Newton. He served his country with honor and dedication for 20 years in the United States Army. Throughout his military career, he embodied courage, discipline, and a deep sense of duty — values he carried with him throughout his life. After retiring from active service, Lud remained a source of strength and wisdom to all who knew him.
He was a loving husband of Kathleen for 59 years and a devoted family man to his daughters, Laura and Nicole. Lud was known for his dedication to his family and loved telling stories about all of his experiences.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Newton; his two daughters, Laura Legra (Joseph Legra) and Nicole Ragan (Eddie Wilson), grandson, Nick Ragan; sister, Mary Ann Droitcourt; brother-in-law, Larry Foster (Marty Foster). He was proceeded in death by his parents Alfonso and Effie Newton, his brother Joseph Ehlinger (Viola Ehlinger), his in-laws Harry and Ruth Foster and sister-in-law Carolyn Shoberg (Randy Patrick). His memory will also be cherished by extended family, friends, and fellow veterans who were fortunate to know him.
Visitation will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Madison, AL on September 15, 2025 at 10:00 am, with mass following at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (www.stjohnbchurch.org) or Vietnam Veterans of America (www.vva.org) in his honor. Lud will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his service, love, and legacy.
