Mary Kay Mahan, 75, of Madison, AL died peacefully on December 30, 2025.
Mary Kay was born in Ames, IA to Kay and Darlene Eliason. She was the oldest of seven children.
Mary Kay, a graduate of Iowa State University in Elementary Education, taught on and off while Ellie and Matt were younger and continued teaching for the next nearly 35 years. She spent many years teaching 1 st grade at Holy Family School in Huntsville, AL and saw teaching as a vocation, not a job. In addition to teaching, Mary Kay was an expert Quilter with several of her pieces registered with the GA Historical Society. She was very creative and always kept her house looking like it belonged in a magazine. She was a compassionate, understanding, level-headed, loving individual who also loved the game of bridge. She always placed her family first.
Mary Kay was preceded in death by her parents Kay and Darlene Eliason, son Matthew Mahan, and siblings Bill, Mark, and Scott Eliason and is survived by her devoted husband Bob Mahan, daughter Ellie (Greg) Griffis, grandchildren Drew, Will and Molly Griffis, brothers Jay (Carolyn) and Kayce (Debbie) Eliason, sister Peggy Michelmore, sisters-in-law Bev and Linda Eliason, and an extended family.
Funeral services will be held at Most Merciful Jesus Catholic Parish (10509 Segers Rd, Madison, AL 35756) on Saturday, January 17, 2025. Visitation will be held at 9:00 am with a funeral mass at 10:00 am followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Holy Family School Capital Campaign c/o St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2300 Beasley Avenue NW, Huntsville, AL 35816 where Mary Kay taught for over 20 years.
