Mary Evelyn Daniel Wright, of Huntsville, AL, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Huntsville Hospital after a brief illness. Born on November 15, 1931, in Centre, AL, Cherokee County, she was the only beloved daughter of Roy Lee Daniel and Dovie Merelene Stinson Daniel. Throughout her 94 years, Mary Evelyn brought joy to many through her infectious smile, laughter, optimism, and friendliness.
Mary Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, George Gordon Wright Jr.; her parents, Roy and Dovie Daniel; and her beloved cat of eighteen years, Baby Kitty. She is survived by her much-loved daughters, Pamela Wright Thompson and Kimberly Wright Robbins, and her treasured grandchildren, Rebecca and Rachel. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews who loved her dearly will fondly remember her.
Mary Evelyn spent her childhood in a rural farmhouse, where her life was centered on Christian faith, learning, and family values—principles that shaped her character and pursuits. She was baptized as a child in the lake near Calcedonia Baptist Church in Centre, Alabama.
Mary Evelyn graduated from Cherokee County High School in 1950, where she was a member of the cheerleading squad. In the summer of 1949, she married George Gordon Wright Jr., the love of her life, eloping to north Georgia. As the wife of a United States Air Force veteran, Mary Evelyn lived on multiple Air Force bases across the country. After her husband’s 20 years of service, they settled in Huntsville, AL. The couple were married for 42 years until George’s passing in 1991.
A lifelong learner, Mary Evelyn returned to college in her mid-thirties to study nursing at Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Alabama, where she earned an Advanced Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) degree. She dedicated many years of service to Huntsville Hospital, working in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Quality Assurance departments, providing vital care to countless patients. Later, she retired from Fox Army Health Center (FAHC), where she offered her nursing skills to the pediatric unit.
Mary Evelyn took art classes from Jean Wood, traded antiques, and collected coins and uncirculated bills. After she retired, she enjoyed traveling to Europe with her nursing friends. She was passionate about watching Alabama football enthusiastically every Saturday. Her favorite color was most definitely crimson red. Since the mid-fifties, Mary Evelyn was a devoted fan of Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock and Roll.” Later in life, she developed an interest in watching golf every Sunday afternoon rooting for Rory McIlroy, her favorite Northern Irishman golfer.
Mary Evelyn touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She will always be remembered for her generosity, warmth, and selfless nature. Her passion for faith, family, and friends was evident in all she did, and she was always ready to give back to others. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, strength, and compassion that continues to inspire those who knew her.
