Stephen Hayes Lee, Sr., a dedicated career Army Officer, esteemed educator, and devoted family man, passed away on March 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, wisdom, and love. Stephen was born in Chester, South Carolina, July 14, 1938; grew up on James Island, near Charleston; and graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg before becoming an Army Officer.
A proud veteran, Stephen served his country with honor, including a combat tour in Vietnam. After retiring from his distinguished military career, he embarked on a second chapter as a high school mathematics teacher, where he continued to shape the lives of young people with his knowledge and guidance.
Stephen was the beloved husband of Lynn Willard Lee and a loving father. He is survived by his children: Stephen H. Lee, Jr. and wife Stephanie Lee; Lauri Lee Sherrell and husband Chandler "Skip" Sherrell; and Scott T. Lee and wife Mary Beth Lee; as well as two “adopted sons,” Rob and Tom Noma. He was preceded in death by his son, John H. Lee II, who passed in 2001. His legacy continues through his 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way.
A true outdoorsman, Stephen found great joy in hunting and fishing. He took immense pride in teaching these skills to his children, their friends, and other family members, creating lasting bonds and cherished memories. A passionate sports enthusiast, he was a constant source of support for his children’s athletic pursuits in football, swimming, skiing, golf and more. Many will fondly remember the countless hours he spent in the front yard or on the neighborhood street, patiently honing the athletic skills of his children and their friends after a long day's work.
Stephen will be remembered for his quick wit, his broad vocabulary, and his exceptional talent as a storyteller. His captivating tales and warm presence will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
