Theresa Pauline Pope

April 8, 1931 — May 10, 2025

Madison

Theresa P. Pope was born April 8, 1931, to the union of the late Jannie Brown and Paul Jones in Palm Beach, Florida. She moved to Sheldon, South Carolina while a young child where she and her brother, the late William Jones, were raised by their grandparents, the late Ada and Tony Brown while her parents worked outside the state of South Carolina.

Theresa accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church for over fifty years where she was an active member of two women’s clubs.

As a young teenager, Theresa attended boarding school in St. Helena Island, South Carolina. It was there that she met the late Edwin S. Pope, who would later become her husband. Edwin left South Carolina to join the U.S. Army, while Theresa left for employment in Manhattan, NY where she lived for five years. Theresa returned to South Carolina and she and Edwin became engaged.

Theresa and Edwin moved to Philadelphia, PA where they were united in holy matrimony in June 1954 and made Philadelphia, PA their home. Three children were born of this happy union. Theresa was a military spouse so the family had residences at Ft Dix, NJ and abroad in Germany.

Theresa always demonstrated high work ethics and a belief in being a contributing part of society. She attended school at the Opportunity Industrialization Center in Philadelphia, PA to learn the skill of sewing. She put those skills to work as a Seamstress for a U.S. Army program making army uniforms until the program ended. Theresa’s employment continued as a Seamstress working for a major clothing factory in South Philadelphia where she later retired.

In her free time Theresa enjoyed watching movies, sitting outside to get sun, fresh air and people watch, phone calls to stay in touch with family and friends and shopping at the Dollar store. A soft-spoken person, she spoke with wisdom, demonstrated integrity, honesty, pride in one’s self and the importance of being trustworthy. A financially savvy woman who stressed saving some of what you earn, never spending more than you earn and living within your means. Theresa was a well-poised woman with a beautiful smile and a great sense of humor.

On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Theresa transitioned this life to be with the Lord. She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Dolores Dixon of Philadelphia, PA, Vera Stancil (Ray) of Madison, AL and Carol Pope of Philadelphia, PA; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Jones (Barbara) Jr. of Philadelphia, PA, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
