Victoria Anne Durand Sutherland

May 4, 1948 — February 2, 2026

Madison

Victoria Anne Durand Sutherland, age 77, passed peacefully at her home in Madison, Alabama, in the early morning hours of February 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Victoria was born on May 4, 1948, in Plaquemine, Louisiana, to Cletus Andrew Durand and Mary Anna Milazzo Durand, both of whom preceded her in death. She was raised in Plaquemine and, following the passing of her mother when Victoria was only thirteen years old, was lovingly cared for by her father and her Aunt Lizzie, who helped raise Victoria and her siblings with devotion, love, and great family gatherings centered around southern Louisiana food. She attended St. John Catholic School and remained deeply connected to her Catholic faith throughout her life. In her later years, she was a devoted parishioner of Most Merciful Jesus Catholic Church in Madison, Alabama, where she found great peace in prayer and within her church family.

In her early adult life, Victoria pursued a career in healthcare and became a registered Radiologic Technician after completing her training at the Charity Hospital School of Radiologic Technology in New Orleans. After becoming a mother, she chose to devote herself fully to raising her children as a stay-at-home mother, proudly cherishing her role. She also pursued cake decorating as a part-time job and hobby, a creative outlet that reflected her love of celebrating life’s moments and bringing joy to others. Later in life, she returned to work at Tuesday Morning in Terrytown, Louisiana, where she found a great number of friends.

Victoria was a compassionate, attentive, and deeply devoted mother. She consistently encouraged her children to follow their individual passions, value education and friendships, and believe in themselves. Her greatest pride and joy were her sons and grandchildren, and she found fulfillment in supporting their dreams and celebrating their successes at every opportunity. Mailing boxes of treats to her grandchildren was one of her greatest joys - and theirs.

She was married to George Allan Sutherland, with whom she shared many years of marriage until his passing on May 15, 2018. Together, they built a life rooted in family, following George’s career across the eastern United States. Their journey included homes in Dale City, Virginia; Pensacola, Florida - which Victoria especially loved and associated with joyful summer white-sand memories; and New Orleans and the Westbank of Louisiana.

Victoria is survived by her three sons:
Eric Allan Sutherland and his wife Amanda Ellen Sutherland, and their children Leah Ellen Sutherland and Roan Allan Sutherland; Trent Andrew Sutherland and his wife Melissa Geryl Sutherland, and their children Jude Allan Sutherland, Elizabeth Anne Sutherland, and Gabriel Allan Sutherland; Ian Wayne Sutherland and his wife Genevieve Louise Sutherland, and their children Imogene Mabel Sutherland, Adelaide Louise Sutherland, and Angus Langdon Sutherland.

She is also survived by her siblings Mary Alena Thayer, wife of the late Arthur H. Thayer and Ophelia Collins, wife of Terry W. Collins, and was preceded in death by her brother Cletus Andrew Durand, Jr.

Victoria will be laid to rest at Grace Memorial Park in Plaquemine, Louisiana, returning to the place where her life began and where so many of her cherished memories were formed.
