Yon Ung Chong, 83, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, May 12.
Born in Seoul, Korea in 1942 to Soo Hwa Chong and Yong Au, Yon Ung immigrated to the United States in 1982 with his family to build a new life. He established roots in the Wiregrass area of Alabama, where he successfully owned and operated several businesses. Through hard work he achieved a family milestone of sending his daughters to college as first-generation college students.
Yon Ung was a devoted member of the Huntsville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He also found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed taking long walks, playing golf, and spending time with his grandchildren and pets.
Yon Ung was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved son, Moon Gyo Chong. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Ui Sun; his three loving daughters, Min Suk Chong, Jenny Suk Chin Owen (Jay), and Erin Yun Hui Hudson (Benton); and his four grandchildren, Ruby Hudson, Ryan Owen, Noah Owen, and Edie Hudson.
Services to honor and celebrate Yon Ung’s life will be held at Legacy Chapel Funeral Home in Madison. Visitation will take place at 11am on Saturday, May 16, followed by a funeral service at 1pm. Burial will follow at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
