Jimmy Lee Powers

Dr. Jimmy Lee Powers, DVM, of Athens, Alabama, abruptly passed into eternity at the age of 76. He was a spirited and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Jim is survived by his loving wife Marijke Agnes Powers; children Laura Beth Barnes and her husband, Clint & Amy Lynn Baker; four grandchildren: Sam and Lucy Barnes & Noah and Max Baker; many family members, friends, and neighbors.

Jim was also a wonderful stepfather to Harmon John Ambrose Gage, Jenny Maria Gage, and Justin Henry Gage.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Howard Manford & Mary Opal Powers; two brothers, John & Joe Powers and a sister, Mary Evelyn Hager.

Born in Jackson, Tennessee, Jim came from very humble beginnings and those characteristics never left him. He attended the University of Tennessee and graduated from Auburn University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. He practiced large and small animal veterinary medicine in the Huntsville-Madison area for over forty years. Dr. Powers’ love for God and deep compassion for animals was apparent to anyone who knew him.

Jim cherished his numerous hunting and work dogs, relished the simplicity of farm life, and took pleasure in tending to his garden. At heart, he was a true food enthusiast. Engaging in the complete farm-to-table process was not just a passion but a way of life for him. Jim enjoyed sharing the literal fruits of his labor and sharing what he learned along the way. He had little attachment to material possessions and he consistently extended a helping hand to others. Jim was affectionately recognized for the multifaceted nature of his personality.  Encounters with Jim highlighted that he was a family man, a source of laughter, a dreamer, a man of profound faith, a savvy businessman, a wordsmith, a thrifty shopper, and a natural teacher.
